A Stormathon hackathon vision project: a counter-narrative to nationalist food sovereignty, built on diaspora knowledge as a strategic asset. One empty building per district of Malmö, reborn as a food + work + community commons.
In 2035, Malmö's food crisis tips. Sixteen-year-old Ella runs away to join Homeland Harvest, a nationalist movement promising "Swedish food for Swedish children." But here's what Homeland Harvest can't see: Malmö is the 4th most international city in the world, and the very newcomers they want to deport are arriving with the deepest food knowledge — Syrian intercropping, Filipino urban beans, Brazilian cassava, Korean fermentation. The job crisis IS the food crisis. The Global Food Hub turns one empty building per district into a 5-floor commons (rooftop solar + lab + people floor + market/kitchen + self-sufficient base). Newcomers get paid 12-month Welcome Apprenticeships. Restaurants get B2B supply two streets away. Empty real estate becomes the substrate for sovereignty. Sovereignty is shared, or it's a siege.

N — Need. Two crises, one missing piece. Indoor farms keep failing for distribution reasons. Newcomers locked out of work. Allotments speculate to 1.2M kr. Homeland Harvest rises by promising sovereignty through exclusion.
A — Approach. The Global Food Hub. One per district. Empty building → 5 floors (rooftop solar/honey · food lab · people floor · kitchen+market+commons · self-sufficient base). City offers space at low/no cost. Coalition: City + Botildenborg + SLU + MAU + Yalla Trappan + diaspora associations + restaurants. Vinnova/Formas pilot funding (~3-5M SEK / 3 years).
B — Benefit. Three crises solved at once: jobs, integration, food sovereignty. Newcomers get a real first paid job in 3 weeks. Locals get affordable food + community. Teens get a reason to stay. The city activates dead real estate. The planet gets heritage seeds and self-sufficient buildings.
C — Competition. Botildenborg, Yalla Trappan, SLU's farm — these models work, but each is one site. Indoor farms produce food but fail at distribution. We combine production + paid integration + community market + research lab in walkable, replicable buildings.
2026 → Pilot Hub launches in Sofielund
2030 → 5 district Hubs operational
2040 → ~50 Hubs across all Malmö districts
2050 → One Hub within 400m of every Malmö resident
- The job crisis IS the food crisis — they have one shared solution.
